Overall, this rifle rates in about Good to Very Good condition as an antique. The metal shows a freckling of light surface erosion. The front of the barrel shows patches of surface erosion. The metal shows scrapes, scratches, and varying degrees of discoloration from oxidation. Overall Condition: This rifle has lost its metal finish to oxidation. There is fouling and intermittent erosion in the grooves.

The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition as a refurbished antique.īore Condition: The muzzle & grooves are grey and the rifling is crisp. The LOP measures 13 ½ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttstock. Many of the marks have damaged small portions of the surface wood. The wood shows several scrapes, scratches, and compression marks.

The rear edge of the crack flexes slightly when pressure is applied. The rear of the handguard shows a large repaired crack. The buttplate shows small scratches and surface erosion. Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a straight grip, finger grooves, barrel band, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage. The “C” markings designate this as a Carbine sight.

The sight ladder is marked from “1-23” as well as “C” on the left edge. When flipped up the assembly becomes a sight ladder with a sliding “U” notched blade. The left side of the rear sight base is marked “C 5 4B 3 2 1” for use with the escalator. The Model 1901 Carbine rear sight (page 105 of William Brophy’s book, The Krag Rifle) is an adjustable “U” notched escalator assembly when down. Sights / Optics: The front sight is a pinned blade atop a raised base. The bottom of the grip is marked with a “circled P” proof. The left side of the stock, above the trigger, is marked with a boxed inspector’s cartouche “JSA / 1899” (J.S. The left edge of the sight ladder is marked “C” for Carbine. This serial number falls within the Model 1898 Krag Carbine serial number range listed on page 65 of William Brophy’s book, The Krag Rifle (118,894 to 134,256). The metal surfaces show thinning to the finish with only a small amount of light handling present. The trap door in the butt plate contains a cylindrical vessel with a screw on lid where is fitted a pin for cleaning and oiling. The walnut stock and hand guard shows assorted scattered light handling with the top of the butt stock just forward of the butt plate showing an area approximately 2 1/4" long x 1 1/4" wide that appears to have been lightly ground. The front sight is a pinned blade and the rear sight is fully adjustable and folding graduated to 20. Springfield rifle has an "NJ" marked butt plate with a "JSA/1903" cartouche on the left side of the stock just above the trigger and a fine circle "P" on the underside of the straight grip wrist.
